First Sgt. Robert Pinn served in Company I of the 5th United States Colored Troops, also known as the 127th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On Sept. 29, 1864, during the Battle of New Market Heights, Va., Pinn took command of his company after all the officers had been killed or wounded and gallantly led it through the battle. For his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. In August 2025, Fort Walker, Va., formerly Fort A.P. Hill, was redesignated as Fort A.P. Hill again, this time in recognition of Medal of Honor recipients Pvt. Bruce Anderson, Pinn and Lt. Col. Edward Hill. Pinn’s legacy lives on as part of the installation’s revived name.

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 174th Air Defense Artillery Regiment were among the approximately 7,500 participants during Exercise Northern Strike 25-2, Aug. 2-16, 2025. Michigan’s largest and longest exercise designed to validate the capabilities of the joint reserve force, Exercise Northern Strike provides realistic, multidomain training to enhance readiness and interoperability. Northern Strike 25-2 was conducted at the National All-Domain Warfighting Center, which encompasses Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center and Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center.

As the Air National Guard's first Cyberspace Wing, the unit has been tasked to complete several mission conversion requirements to become fully operational.

Airmen and aircraft from the 121st Air Refueling Wing took part in Resolute Force Pacific (REFORPAC) 2025 at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, July 10-Aug. 8, 2025. For the exercise, the Air Force tasked U.S. Pacific Air Forces to demonstrate its ability to rapidly deploy thousands of service members and associated equipment to multiple locations in the Indo-Pacific theater of operations to defend the U.S., allied and partner nations and their interests in the Pacific. REFORPAC 2025 employed more than 400 joint and coalition aircraft and more than 12,000 service members at more than 50 locations across 3,000 miles.

Approximately 80 Airmen from the 200th Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineers (RED HORSE) Squadron, headquartered in Port Clinton, Ohio, supported Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) during a training deployment to Anderson Air Force Base, Guam, from March to June 2025. The four-month deployment strengthened the base’s critical training infrastructure and provided 200th RED HORSE members the opportunity to sharpen their skills and enhance readiness in a dynamic environment not typically found at their home station.

The 2025 Ohio Army National Guard Best Warrior Competition, held at Camp James A. Garfield this year, brought together the best Soldiers and noncommissioned officers from six brigade-level commands to test their resilience, fitness, tactical skills and cognitive abilities. At the conclusion of the four-day event, Spc. William Schmitt, of Troop C, 2nd Squadron, 107th Cavalry Regiment, was named Soldier of Year and Sgt. Benjamin Kovacic, of the 323rd Military Police Company, was named NCO of the Year. Both Soldiers moved on to represent Ohio in the ARNG Region IV BWC at Fort McCoy, Wis.
