WASHINGTON, D.C. - An Ohio Army National Guardmember traveled to the nation’s capitol this spring to receive one of the U.S. Army’s most prestigious awards.

Capt. David Haynes is the second Ohio Army National Guardmember to earn the General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award (GDMLA). The award was created in 1987 by the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation to recognize company-grade officers who demonstrate MacArthur's ideals of duty, honor and country.

Army Chief of Staff Gen. George W. Casey Jr. and Henry Harris III, a representative of the Gen. Douglas MacArthur Foundation, presented the award to Haynes and 27 other company-grade officers at a May 11, 2009, ceremony at the Pentagon.

The officers are selected based on their leadership performance, team-building skills, ability to influence, commitment to Army values, technical and tactical competence and understanding of their leaders, subordinates, and peers. They are presented a 15-pound bronze bust of the famous American general.

Brig. Gen. Rufus J. Smith, commander of the 174th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, was the first Ohio National Guardmember to receive the honor in 1992.
