38th Infantry Division commander gets second star

ACOE logoINDIANAPOLIS (07/13/18) — Gen. Gordon L. Ellis, a member of the Ohio National Guard and commanding general of the 38th Infantry Division, received his two-star rank and promotion to major general during a July 13 ceremony the division’s headquarters.

“I will never forget that I stand here today to a great extent based on your labor, your effort and your sacrifice,” Ellis said to the division soldiers, VIPs and guests in attendance at the ceremony.

Ellis leads the 38th by focusing on the development of the agility, adaptiveness, proficiency and lethalness of its approximately 8,000 Citizen-Soldiers, while continuing to contribute to the division’s history of achievements.

Ellis has served in the Ohio Army National Guard for more than 30 years and has three overseas deployments in support of Kosovo (2004-05), Kuwait and Iraq (2008) and Afghanistan (2011).

In his civilian occupation, Ellis is the sheriff of Brown County, Ohio, located about 50 miles east of Cincinnati.

“I do not forget the responsibility I have to not only lead well but, always be mindful that training and decision relate directly to the level of risk to be faced either on mission or in training,” Ellis said. “I understand that without Soldiers, there is no need for leaders.” 

The 38th Infantry Division is one of one of eight Army National Guard divisions and one of 18  divisions in the Total Army, both active and Reserve Components.

Ellis and his wife Jenny have four adult children and one grandchild.
